I am shopping for a laptop to replace my aging Dell Inspiron 8100

Yeah it's an oldie!

It will be taken portable ~ 50% of the time, prefer a screen
no bigger than say 14", and minimal weight would be nice.

I also need the battery to last 6-8 hours if possible.

Would like one with an integrated fingerprint swiper (scanner)
that digitalpersona's U are U will work with. So far I know it
works with Lenovo, Fujitsu and some Toshiba,

I'll be using Windows XP Pro, would prefer to not have to buy
another copy if possible...already own it so why pay the
microsoft tax?

Would prefer 1gb or more of ram
DVD/RW drive
capabilities of a port replicator with USB, ethernet and VGA connections.

Any favorites or suggestions?

I would take a Toshiba or a Fujitsu over Lenova any day.

You do know that there are hacks for bypassing some of the fingerprint scanners?

The T60 Lenovo's aren't bad (get the 9 cell battery for about 4hrs of life with the bigger 15" screen)... stay away from their entry level stuff, it's crap.

Tell me more about these hacks, do they allow access to
password protected items? Is it a hack for the laptops swipers
or fingerprint scanners in general?

What do you dislike about Lenovo, I've never owned anything
other than a Dell laptop.

Thanks

Here is just one example. And also the Mythbusters did it.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2002/05/16/gummi_bears_defeat_fingerprint_sensors/

As far as Lenov0, I just do not think they have same suport as the other two.
Have heard some bad stories.

Dell still makes a good laptop.

MG,

I replaced my Latitude 600 with a Latitude 820, it has a 15.4" screen, 2GB of Ram, Centrino Duo T2500 2.0 GHZ, it is awesome with XP, and So So with Vista, mainly due to the Vista, IE, and Office 2007 bugs. It cost me about $1800 with XP Pro and the free Vista upgrade. You can buy all of the Dells without an OS.

Yeah I do always suggest dells, nothing like 4 hour support. My laptop is only 6 months old and they replaced my LCD in 4 hours after my son "played with it" with no questions asked...

How do you buy a Dell with no O/S?

I called and asked Dell if I could buy one with no O/S
andwas told no.

The latitude D820 can come with a fingerprint scanner
and was on my list..it becomes more attractive if I can
get it with no O/S.

Can ya help a guy buy one with no O/S?

I can't beat those prices, but I can get you a copy of Vista Ultimate for your new machine...

Please don't start a me too on this guys unless you want to blow me..... Cuz I aint getting in trouble with MS. I have one free copy from the Microsoft New Day release I went to.

MG I can always buy from dell with no OS. Maybe because I work with Higher Education and we use volume licensing agreements with MS. I know I can get better prices, but you don't live very close to me...

I can get Vista if I want it....what I really want is to not
have to pay for ANOTHER copy of Windows XP!

I know you can buy desktops without an O/S but unfortunately
don't know how to get a laptop without an O/S.
