I've got one and yes, they are junk. I bought mine because I was curious about how it worked. It works if the solder is about the diameter of piece of thread, but does nothing but waste your time on virtually anything larger. If you're looking for a portable soldering solution, I would recommend the butane-powered type that Radio Shack sells for about the same price as the Cold Heat unit.....

yes, they are complete and utter junk. If you don't make contact with BOTH points of the tip, you get nothing. If the tip breaks... you might as well buy a new one. Also the tip is about as wide as a fuckin pencil eraser.. try soldering something intricate with that. Personally I prefer the butane torches, then the 30W radio shack models... however out at my shop there's a 250W gigantic soldering iron from 1950-something which I've never used but from what I hear, sewsie might want it!

We use to have rechargeable battery soldering units that had interchangeable tips that worked great for small mobile jobs.... They's heat up in seconds. Tips were a bit fragile but they still served the purpose great.... Eventually the batteries gave out and we got to the point where we didn't need to do any soldering any longer so we never tried replacing them. Not sure they even exist any longer...

What Dredger is talking about was the shit. The heat up instantly, but took a while to cool off

The cold soldering irons are shit. Not much that they can do, but on te bright side, you probably wont burn your fingers, either

I would wear it in front of him. If he was around I probably wouldn't be married to a girl 12 years younger than me.
