I am going to be buying a satellite radio and was wondering if anyone could give me some feedback on which format they like best. Also what brand and features to look for. Is the fm modulator better or worse than the tape deck adaptor?

I had sirius sat that went directly in line with the antenae input of the radio. I liked their format (past tense I sold the car that I had installed it in) but really don't have a comparison to give you.

I think I am going to get the sirius format. With the audiovox pnp system. I will try it with the fm modulator just because I can take it anywhere then. I heard that hardwireing into your car audio gives the best sound. I will let you know how I make out.

I love and completely swear by my Pioneer fm modulated XM Radio in my truck... It totally kicks ass... Squizz is my fav channel, and then some of the urban (rap shit) channels afterwards...

Love the way that, since its subscriber based, you hear em swearing and stuff all the time. Its REAL radio man... No bullshit, and no commercials now either.. Plus tons of traffic channels and stuff too... They just expanded the channel line up in the past month or so....

I hardly ever use my mp3 player anymore... For real!!!

XM Rules man... I just gotta get another unit in my wifes car...

XM sounds so much better than sirius. Go to the store and here for yourself.

One buddy has sirius and one has xm, they both like em but I think I wan't to borrow both units and listen to them in the ramcharger and see how they sound and get a feel for the channels I prefer.

And don't forget that XM is cheaper.

I got a pioneer xm radio unit, that came with a controller to use with the fm modulation for 150... then got a rebate for 100 bucks, so it only cost me 50 bucks too.

My yearly renewal just came up for xm, and it was only 167 CDN... So thats like 50 cents US!

Check out channel 152 - It's the "Real Radio" channel. It's a radio station from my old home town. I used to listen to them all the time. Check out the "Monsters of the Morning" from 6 am until 11. Funny ass shit!!!

Funny. Reason I got satellite radio was just so that I didn't have to listen to people talk in the morning or commercials.

Many different reasons why peeps get it I guess.

I agree.... BUT, i also like listening to the comedy channel when on the long drives, as well as sometimes the talk channels or sports/news also on long drives.

Mainly the music channels though...

(Although i think i would listen to stern if I could find him on xm, is he on there somewhere?)

I got a Delphi SkyFi w/ FM modulator... screw that adapter crap. Didn't wanna phuck with the factory setup, so I didn't start with an XM-ready unit. The modulator seems to do the job, though. Add to that the micro-antennae...

I dig it, guys... Music WHEN I want it; news WHEN I want it... WHATEVER WHEN I want it.

I'm going to get an XM Commander, I think... anyone got any good things (or bad) to say about the unit? Of course, the little shit behind the counter was all, "It's the shizzle!" But... he would, wouldn't he, lol?

My cousin has an xm delphi roadie with the fm modulator and was having sound quality issues, he was using an alpine head unit. He switched to a jvc unit with a input on the front so he can hard wire the xm into it and he says it made such a difference its unbelievable. He said he used someones cassette adaptor and it helped also. My sirius should be here anyday, I'll let you know how it works.

Had the Sirius audiovox system for a few days now and love it! Laugh my ass off listening to the Raw Dog comedy channel. I haven't heard it with the tape adaptor but the fm modulator seems to sound fine to me. After listening to mine for an evening a buddy with a xm system seems to like the sirius channel lineup better, but its hard to tell unless you listen for a few days at least I'd imagine. The only complaint I have is that the quick detachable base seems a little flimsy. One the plus side, if size isn't an issue I find the larger buttons and dial handier to use over a delphi roadie. Better display also.

OK 6 months later and it looks like stern is going to make that jump at any time. They are saying he might get booted at any time from the provider he is with,. Probably getting pissed at all his free advertising and lots of people will jump ship!

I think it came out around Christmas. The MyFi holds up to 5 hours of programming and yes you can pause live radio also. Even my new SkyFi2 has a 30 minute Tivo type feature.

I bought my sirius radio about six months ago at flying j's gas and truck stop and I must admit it is great I love it and now that nascar is coming it will be even better and best of all I got a 50.00 rebate so the total system with everything needed was only 19.99 after rebate after only 2 days I liked it so much I went out and bought the second system and even saved alot more as I paid for a full year of service at 11.00 a month and on the second system it only cost me 5.99 a month so i saved even more. sirius is the way to go.

I've got the Sirius S50. Fucking rocks.

I've also got XM in my truck. I hate it. As soon as my trial sub. runs out, I won't be renewing unless I can talk them into paying me to keep their service...

I think the big decider is what sports packages you like most. I chose XM for NASCAR, and that is the only reason I'll switch to Sirius next year. I'm betting the music choices are damn near the same on both. My favorite is "The Boneyard" on XM.

I bought it for the music boneyard is a good one! One of there best music station if i had xm first i would probably saying it's the best . Nascar i like seeing it on tv or at the race track but it would be nice when they have a rain delay and run it on a Monday it would be nice to hear it at work i'll have to wait until 2007

What sucks is I bought three docking stations (one for Jeep, one for office, one for home) and a watertight dock for the boat. Two months later I learned they were switching NASCAR to Sirius.

I guess I'll have an eBay auction going next year.

I haven't seen a watertight dock yet for Sirius. Hopefully they have one by next year.

Best thing that like about satellite radio no commercials the 2 assholes i work with hate my selection of music ( rage against the machine -slipknot-taproot-fly leaf -white zombie
rob zombie) I do all 3D Programming convert all DXF files make all 3D models cad/cam
all 3D surfaces and all they do is cut your throat because they don't KNOW SHIT so i play it very load ( got my own stereo system here) when Friday's roll around you could land a jet within a hundred feet and i would not hear it you can't get that with fm station

Well just bought a new vehicle and I'm considering getting satellite radio.... The audio system is satellite capable so I'm guessing I just need to get a module installed... I'm leaning toward Sirius. They have a lifetime subscription they offer for $499.99 which sound pretty good... Her's their description of the plan....

Subscribe for the lifetime of your radio! Pay ONLY $499.99 once and forget about bills. Plus, act soon and you can transfer your lifetime subscription to a different SIRIUS Receiver when you upgrade or replace your radio — up to three times — for only $75 per radio. Offer ends July 31, 2006.

It plugs into your existing radio unit and mounted out of site, no ugly head units mounted on your dash.
A little pricey but worth it.

So normally the "lifetime" subscription is for the life of the radio...not the subscriber?

Well not if you want to pay the $75 transfer fee... So you can actually use the subscription for an additional 3 vehicles when and if you go and buy them... You just transfer the sub to the new radio in the new car....

I'm now sort of hedging on getting satellite radio.... If I go to my Ford dealer to get the module kit installed for my current audio system it's going to cost me around $450 installed. Then tack on whatever subscription I decide to go with.... Seems a bit steep to me for just radio.... I have to re-think this a bit...

That is why I use the SkiFi2. I have a docking station at work, one in the Jeep, one at home and one in the boat. One sub and I can use it anywhere I go.

I bought the 2 year package as it averaged to about $7 bucks a month. I would of went longer but I knew NASCAR was switching to Sirrius in 07. So next year I have to start looking for new equipment.

I think alot depends on your area/travel habits too. I happen to have a LOT of good radio stations in the area, and don't travel out of this region much so it's not a big deal. My friend lives in bfe and gets 1 God station and 1 country so it's damned near vital!

I use to head off to the mountains quite bit but haven't done so for awhile and really don't plan on doing so in the near future. I do go visit friends over in Nevada. That would be where the satellite service would really be usefull. Other than that I get good radio stations here where I live.... But then again I like new toys so I'm still considering doing it.....

Would you be interested in installing it yourself, they ain't that hard to install.
It has a central location it gets mounted to, the plugin is taped to a harness by the mounting location.
Plug that into the head unit, mount your antenna and run the antenna wire to the head unit. Done.

Actually, Sat. installs aren't too bad depending on where you need to run the antenna. If it's a roof mounted, that can be a bit of a pain. Dash mounted installs are VERY easy.

Well I was told it will need a roof mounted antenna... I brought my SUV into the dealer this morning. After waiting about an hour or so they told me the module kit came with the wrong harness. So thay had to put it all back together again and they are ordering the right one. So it looks like a couple of more days before this gets done. Sort of a bummer.... I was really pysched about getting it installed today... Oh well shit like this seems to happen to me all the time... If I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all I guess..

You should see where my antenna is mounted in my Jeep.

I just threw it on the dash.

Well this has become an adventure.... The part came in last Friday but it was the harness/adaptor that they already had. So they had to go back to their vendor and order it again. It should be in either today or tomorrow. Hopefully it'll be the right part this time... But I'm not going to get to psyched about it....

Well I'm just a tad bit pissed off right now....Service manager said that the installer would be there at 8:30. So I get there a bit before.... So I sit around for about 30 minutes and the SM tells me that the guy called and said that he overslept but was on his way. 30 more minutes pass and the SM tells me he called to find out where the hell the guy was and the guy said that he had to make one stop first to do another job and that he's be there in 10 minutes.... Of course he didn't show up for another 30 minutes.... Anyway he attempts to do the installation and another hour later claims that he ran into another problem. Seems that for some reason he couldn't get the module connected correctly to the radio. Might be that the newer 2006 models can't work with that particular module or some bullshit. I didn't talk to the installer personally myself. Anyway the service manager said that he has to research this. But I'm not sure if the installer just wasn't a moron...

Sounds to me like you just need to cancel the whole install...

Goto another shop where they know what their doing.... If you already paid for it, demand your money back.. if paid by credit card, protest the charge....

Well I just want to keep everything in warranty thus the main reason to just do it through the dealership... But I'm getting to the point of re-thinking that....

Ok I decided to go a different route... Went to a local car audio shop that I've used in the past and had them take out the factory radio and had an Alpine unit installed with the Sirius mod kit. Ended up actually costing me about $100 less and it was done in under 30 minutes... Radio looks and sounds great.... Got home and activated it and I've got tunes.....

Under Magnusson Moss verdict Ford can't cancel your warranty if
it was a clean install and the wiring harnesses were left original
which I am sure they were with all the connectors and adapters
that are available to the installers. I think you will like the Alpine unit
better anyway.

I think it came out around Christmas. The MyFi holds up to 5 hours of programming and yes you can pause live radio also. Even my new SkyFi2 has a 30 minute Tivo type feature.

My S50 does 50 hours, and you can upload mp3s to it if you want.

I'm hearing rumblings of a merger between XM and Sirius.

No facts just rumors at this time.

Well, it makes sense. Sirius is bleeding money, and XM can't keep not making money for much longer either. My guess is that Sirius will go belly-up first because they're spending money like a drunk sailor, and aren't making it back on subscriptions. You think they'd have learned something from the satellite TV industry.

Sirius just gave Stern a bonus for $83,000,000 and if the whole bonus
is delivered over the next 2 years it will total $225,000,000.
There is no way that kind of money will ever be made back on subs.
They are driving themselves into oblivion.

True, but he could sell it if he wanted to after 2 years.
The problem is what will it be worth in two years?

Don't hold your breath. XM & Sirius "merging" has about the same chance DirecTV and DishNetwork had of "merging". I have both Sirius and XM in my car as well as the wipe's, and I've already gotten a few "important notices" from both regarding the proposed deal. The fine print isn't nearly as optimistic as the main sales pitch. They seem to think that by calling this a "merger of two equals" they can get around the antitrust issues that sank the DTV/Dish deal. I doubt that's going to get very far with the regulatory powers-that-be. No matter what they call it, it's still taking two and making one, and eliminating the competition that typically keeps consumer pricing affordable......
As for which is better, the wipe prefers XM's music selections, I prefer Sirius'. The only real benefit I've noticed with having both in the same car is that there's always something playing that I want to hear. The drawback is that I rarely actually listen to the entire songs, lol. Still, they both beat FM radio hands down......

XM just suspended Opie and Anthony for 30 days. (Google for more info.)

I canceled my second radio and got 50% off my sub on my main radio for the next 12 months when i told em how pissed i was.

They are getting killed now with people canceling their subs because of this suspension. I had to wait over 30 min to actually talk to someone to cancel and the lady on the phone actually told me they were overwhelmed today by people canceling because of this whole thing.

Go for Sirius.

With the possible merger who knows? But I agree about Sirius.

Finisar is suing both of them for patent infringement. It has to
do with satellite data processing. Seeing as Finisar got over a 100 mil
from DTV over the exact item has got XM and Sirius in real pickle.
They know they are going to pay, but how much. Meanwhile the lawyers
and smacking their lips at these two new suits.

Cancelling because they were only suspended? As opposed to fired outright? Or because they were suspended at all?

Personally, I didn't find the bit funny at all. In fact, I was somewhat disgusted by it. But that's nothing new; I outgrew their idea of comedy when I graduated high school, and I very rarely waste any of my time listening to them now. Or Howard, for that matter. I just changed the channel. So whether or not they should have been punished for what they did isn't really an issue for me. But I could see where the advertisers that sponsor their show might have a problem with it, even though they had to know something was bound to happen sooner or later.....

I tried listening to Opie and Anthony a couple of time. Damn, did they ever suck. Never made me smile, let alone laugh.

I would flip though a bunch of channels on XM and occasionally find something good. Rarely do I have to try more than 2 channels on Sirius.

Damn DE, you listen to NASCAR on the radio? WTF dude, that's like watching a concert with the speakers muted...
