I may have to give that a try while I wait for the new DirecTV box.

It's going to be a toaster later this year. Read the other thread about it.

Geeze DE let the guy enjoy his X-mas present... As far as it being toast later this year... Well not necessarily.. Couple of things. First if he is getting his locals OTA then it will still receive and he will be able to record those channels for however long he has the unit. All that's being impacted is getting locals via DirecTV and possibly other HD programming that might be coming. As far HD programming there really isn't that much and who knows how long before we see more. Also HD games via Sunday Ticket will most likely need to be upgraded to the newer mpeg4 box if he wants to get those channels. But I would still think that SD Sunday Tickets channels would work ok...

LOL, that was kind of harsh. I like fookin' with the tiny balled one.

My last conversation with the rep said to wait till Summer and buy the new box. Currently they have no plans to upgrade the HD10-250 and no plans to do a swap. Current HD10-250 owners who would like the new box will have to pay 200-300 for the new box later this year. Non HD10-250 owners would have to pay a higher price like around 500.

Yes the box will still work but like you said. Any additional channels will not be received by the current box.

And the way it sounded that down the road, not soon, ALL HD channels would eventually converted to mpeg4.

So will the exsisting non-local HD channels be able to be watched without a new receiver? Bear with me-it's an age thing.

That is fine. I was aware of it when I bought it.

From what I understand will be $100 upgrade from what I've heard around other places.

But... at the speed they move at... Not worrying about it till I can't watch anything.

After further consideration and reading the rest of the posts.. if you think the swap will be $200-$300...

You guys think I should just return the fooker.. what a pain in the arse.

From what I gathered on the net and from talking to reps yes you can still watch them with a mpeg2 receiver. A couple years down the road or longer they would like to switch them to mpeg4 but not or quite some time.

Any NEW HD channels and HD locals will be in mpeg4.

Call a rep and see if they have a hard figure yet for the upgrade. When I called they were still in the speculationg phase.

If they decide on a hundred bucks then I would be tempted to buy one now. The OTA mak showed us is $89 and it would save me from buying that.

I'm still not feeling well so I'm staying home today. I'll be cranky enough to mess with another rep later.

OK, here's my latest scoop.

I called and talked to yet another rep.

She said starting around June or July of 2006 they will have the new HD DVRs available. If you currently have a HD10-250 they will offer you an upgrade for "probably" around $100. That will include the new HD DVR receiver and a new dish that will be required and all installation. She said "probably" because they do not have a firm amount at this time but around $100 is what she has been told.

Should you choose not to upgrade the HR10-250 will work fine with "current" HD programming "probably" thru 2007.

Based on what she said I went ahead an put my order back on. Since I already have the triple LNB I talked her into throwning in the OTA anteanna for free.

I told her that come this summer if I need to pay $200 or more to upgrade I'm going to call asking for her by name and raising hell.
She said not to worry, they will take care of me.

Come time for the upgrade if they do not want to take care of you do not call the regular directv reps about it. You will want to call and talk to a customer retension rep... I don't have the number in front of me but if you want or need it it can get gotten fairly easily. These are the reps who will work with you to keep you a customer. As long as you have been with them for awhile and your account has been in good standing then they generally will work out deals for you whereas the regular reps don't have that capability... Plus the customer retention reps always seem to be much more knowledgeable as to what's really going on.

The retention center has saved DTV getting my business.
They are the old Primestar reps and are based in Idaho. They are
solely minded on pleasing customers or keeping them. As long as
the customer's request is not outrageous they usually grant it.
DTV f-ed up so badly once with me that I got 6 months of service
and a $200 hardware credit.
I had cancelled service I was so mad about them cashing my
check and still shutting me off. I paid 3 months in advance because
I hate writing checks and they still shut me off. Some yahoo in the
collection dept keyed in the wrong number for shutting down a
a deadbeat and the incorrect account number was mine. To make things
worse when I called they said the computers to verify that I paid
could be down until 4pm the next day. So I sad cancel my account.
Send me a refund because by 4pm the next day I could be watching
Dishnet. I fully intended to go to the store and get a dish setup.
About noon the next day I get a call from DTV. It was the retention
dept. That is when I told them all of the nagging little issues I had
been thru over the years and the payment mix up was the last straw.
She agreed it was horrible service and before I could say I want that
month free she made the offer of 6 months and $200 hardware credit.

Well, after DE's post (thanks for taking the time) of saying it may be $100.. I'll just stick with the hd tivo receiver now and hope it doesn't run me a chitload in future. The cost of manufacturing these units are falling fast anyway.

I still for the life of me can't understand why you should have to pay $300 for something you will not own and then a monthly lease fee on top of that and also returning the unit if ever you cancel your service. Oh and top of that a 2 year commitment. And not all that much HD programming other than a so called promise about 100's of HD channels that will soon be available. All this from the same people who bitched so much about satellite piracy. Well who are the pirates now? It's all nothing more than fucking greed. But hey it’s the American way I guess…..

They are now selling on eBay and I haven't seen any references mentioned about not owning them. Hmmmm.

And damn it, I see you need a new 5LNB dish. I just wired my new house for the 3LNB with 4 feeds. I see the AT9 has a 4 way multi switch so hopefully my feeds will still work with the new dish in the future.

Woo Hoo !!!

While looking around for info I see where the HR10-250 will be receiving an update soon to speed the fooker up. Be on the lookout for version 6.3 HR10-250 owners.

That has been my only bitch is that it is slow.

Well this has been rumored for quite awhile now though lately it seems to heating up quiite a bit. But I'll still believe it when I see it... Hope though this update is indeed coming and coming soon. Not only for the speed increase but for some other functionality like folders for saving and sorting saved recorded programming. That will be nice...
