$399 is the current offer for existing customers with first 3 months of programming free. When they first came out I think they were $1200 or more. I don't know about mpeg4 as long as I can watch HD on my bigscreen. Finally. Here is the spec sheet. http://www.directv.com/imagine/PDF/HD_DVR.pdf

Well the HD locals they have in 12 markets over the satellite is mpeg4 and any future HD is going to be mpeg4. Found this from http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=127160&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=799955Quote:
To receive local HD channels, DIRECTV now offers the new H20 HD receiver and a satellite dish that has the ability to receive programming from five different orbital locations. The H20 HD set-top is the first DIRECTV receiver to process MPEG-4, the next-generation transmission standard supporting a wide range of audio and video modes and transmission speeds. MPEG-4, coupled with the launch of new satellites, is set to lay the foundation for the best high-definition television experience available anywhere.
The million dollar (or $399) question is whether the mpeg2 units can be upgraded to mpeg4. I'll keep looking to see if they can or will be upgraded.
edit: I found this.. They are planning to offer an mpeg4/mpeg2 compliant DVR the middle of this year.

DIRECTV PLUS(R) HD DVR
The DIRECTV(R) Plus HD DVR (HR20) combines the best entertainment with unprecedented control and convenience to create the ultimate TV viewing experience. It brings together the new DIRECTV Plus DVR and DIRECTV HD Receiver. Viewers are able to record one HD program while watching another and record two different shows at the same time, while watching a pre-recorded program. The DIRECTV Plus HD DVR gives the user the ability to pause and rewind live HD TV up to 90 minutes, use instant replay and watch in slow motion. The DIRECTV Plus HD DVR is able to record more than 30 hours of DIRECTV HD programming delivered in MPEG-2, or up to 50 hours of DIRECTV HD programming delivered in MPEG-4, or up to 200 hours of standard-definition programming. In addition, the DIRECTV Plus HD DVR is MPEG-4 compatible, and is the first DIRECTV HD receiver with interactive capabilities. DIRECTV plans to launch the DIRECTV Plus HD DVR at retail mid-2006.
Hope you didn't buy a boat anchor!

Yes and No.
Currently satellite HD is broadcast in mpeg2. HBO HD and ShowtimeHD TNT16x9, DiscoveryHD, etc.
Anything that is to be added by Dish and Dave is going to be in mpeg4. Say Dave and Dick add National Geographic HD which is coming online 1st Q '06. It will be offered in mpeg4 only. If you have one of today's receivers you will get everything but NG HD. The mpeg4 stream can't be converted by the old receiver. You need to have the new receiver/DVR to watch that channel.
Eventually all of the old mpeg2 HD channels will be switched over to mpeg4. Then you will be up shit creek. No HD through the dish.
But Mak, you are prolly on to something. Maybe DE should find out how he will be treated when the Dave HD DVR comes out if he popped $399 for the old mpeg2 one.
For Dish, I paid $299 one-time lease for the HD DVR. They have already committed to a $99 upgrade cost to me in April. But if they are a standard non-hddvr sub, they can upgrade for $299.
So it is a crap shoot on DE's part. My guess is if they are finally making the committment to HD, they will take care of their current HD customers. But you never know. In my case, I still woulda saved $100 if I had waited. But then again, I would have mised several months of gloating to my relatives and several months jacking off looking at my imaculate Movies.
Also, DE, you may want to consider Dish. After they add 6 more channels 1st Q, they will be up to 25 available HD channels. Plus they will be running a free mpeg2 Olympics channel.
$299 for the current 942 HD DVR, and a $99 upgrade in April=$398. $1 cheaper and more available programming. But the little lady might bitch a little because Dick is in a pissing contest with Lifetime right now so it is currently turned off. But hopefully your wipe has a brain and doesn't watch that shit!!! LOL

That is my wife's number one favorite channel and Lifetime isn't the only womans channel they don't have. The wife's Mother is switching from Dish to Directv because of lost channels. So Dish is not an option at this time.
I just got off the phone with Directv. The rep said the new mpeg4 DVR receiver is due out this Summer and that no upgrade to the HD10-250 or swap out is in the works, I'd be screwed and out of $399. I promptly canceled my order. She did so without hesitation and even agreed with my decision. She said they would contact me when the new receivers are available. She did try to push the standard HD receiver for the meantime but I'm too addicted to my Tivo, must have DVR.
I guess I wait a few months before turning my bigscreen from a Ford to a anything but a Ford.
A BIG THANK YOU for saving me four bills.
