Will you no longer be able to SEE the HD channels or just not be able to record them?

Yes and No.

Currently satellite HD is broadcast in mpeg2. HBO HD and ShowtimeHD TNT16x9, DiscoveryHD, etc.

Anything that is to be added by Dish and Dave is going to be in mpeg4. Say Dave and Dick add National Geographic HD which is coming online 1st Q '06. It will be offered in mpeg4 only. If you have one of today's receivers you will get everything but NG HD. The mpeg4 stream can't be converted by the old receiver. You need to have the new receiver/DVR to watch that channel.

Eventually all of the old mpeg2 HD channels will be switched over to mpeg4. Then you will be up shit creek. No HD through the dish.

But Mak, you are prolly on to something. Maybe DE should find out how he will be treated when the Dave HD DVR comes out if he popped $399 for the old mpeg2 one.

For Dish, I paid $299 one-time lease for the HD DVR. They have already committed to a $99 upgrade cost to me in April. But if they are a standard non-hddvr sub, they can upgrade for $299.

So it is a crap shoot on DE's part. My guess is if they are finally making the committment to HD, they will take care of their current HD customers. But you never know. In my case, I still woulda saved $100 if I had waited. But then again, I would have mised several months of gloating to my relatives and several months jacking off looking at my imaculate Movies.

Also, DE, you may want to consider Dish. After they add 6 more channels 1st Q, they will be up to 25 available HD channels. Plus they will be running a free mpeg2 Olympics channel.

$299 for the current 942 HD DVR, and a $99 upgrade in April=$398. $1 cheaper and more available programming. But the little lady might bitch a little because Dick is in a pissing contest with Lifetime right now so it is currently turned off. But hopefully your wipe has a brain and doesn't watch that shit!!! LOL

That is my wife's number one favorite channel and Lifetime isn't the only womans channel they don't have. The wife's Mother is switching from Dish to Directv because of lost channels. So Dish is not an option at this time.

I just got off the phone with Directv. The rep said the new mpeg4 DVR receiver is due out this Summer and that no upgrade to the HD10-250 or swap out is in the works, I'd be screwed and out of $399. I promptly canceled my order. She did so without hesitation and even agreed with my decision. She said they would contact me when the new receivers are available. She did try to push the standard HD receiver for the meantime but I'm too addicted to my Tivo, must have DVR.

I guess I wait a few months before turning my bigscreen from a Ford to a anything but a Ford.

A BIG THANK YOU for saving me four bills.

Well one thing you should realize about talking to DirecTV reps. They all have different story..... My understanding from what I've been reading is that when the time comes they will have a plan in place to do a swap out for those with the HD10-250. I mean logics tells you that they will have to something since those units are considered DirecTV boxes. No way they will leave customers with those units hanging considering the investment those customers have made. Generally people with those units also sub to the highest programming packages as well.....

As far as the mpeg4? Well right now the only channels being offered for the local markets that are activated are the 4 major network channels. Eventually all local channels will be converted over but I don't think that will happen for awhile.

So far (knock on wook), the reps sound American with good English. Unless they have a really good training program going on down in India.
