Almost all the stuff at diyaudio is based on the lumen labs info. As the price of LCDs drops, it will be more and more tempting.

Are you going to use one of the many free plans, or are you going to buy the plans/kit? The only thing I wish is for small LCDs to get better resolution. Building one that has a 7 inch LCD would make a nice small projector, but with 800x600 why bother. Need at least something that will cover 1080i. A cheap source for small LCDs might be from some of those portable DVD players. Not the best quality, but it would make it cheaper to build for a test machine.
From what I have read, there is a trade off between LCD size, and the quality of the image. Big LCDs allow a lot of light to go through, but they make focus and brightness in the corners harder. I was very close to making one at work, until we bought our new NEC projectors with a 4300 lumen output. These NECs use a much cheaper lamp then previous units, it's something like $125 instead of $300+.

I went ahead and bought their plans. Figured it would be good to support the site... as well, there is a lot of extra info in the forums you get when you pay. TONS of good info.
Hey what model is that NEC you are talking about?
There is a few reasons I want to do the DIY PJ... 1) 20,000 hours lamp life... Lot better than 2000-3000 hrs... and 2) a 35 dollar bulb instead of a 125-600 bulb... and 3) I love to mess around with stuff like this. I get into it, and I can't be torn away from it until its done! hahaha
I'm a modder at heart.
I just gotta find someplace to find a compatible LCD monitor to tear apart now!
I ordered the lenses and bulb kit and wire kit from lumenlab too, but waiting on some parts on backorder.
Maybe as I do this build, I will do up a tutorial to show ya'll how its done.

The NEC is a something/something 1070 and it cost us $4300+ each, we bought 2 of them for classroom use. One class room is in the TV studio, and we have projected to 9x12 feet or so on an off white muslin cyclorama. Looks pretty good, but flickers a little more than our older Mitsubishi (2500 lumens) when using with computers. There is also another projector that looks great even during daylight hours with a wall of open windows near by (not in my department), but I don't know much more than it uses up to 5 lamps at once, and it cost one hell of a lot of money. It is also about 1.5x2x3 foot large and looks like it weighs about 50 pounds. The NEC is only 1024x768 native, and looks pretty bad when you scale it up, the Mitsu looks great at 1024x768 (native) to 1280x1024.

Deejay, I just found this thread and I'm very intrested in the outcome of your projector, as I'm sure lots of us dumbasses are. Could you keep us posted on the progress of this project? Thanks Bro.

Hey DeeJay. I replied to your post on the forums at Lumenlab. Good to see you again. Looks like we're almost at the same stage. I've already got a Benq 15 inch lcd ready to strip and have received my light kit and lenses. I was about to build my box when I saw Haas's enclosure. No way I could build something that nice and it is perfect for ceiling mount. Hope he ships to Canada.
for everyone else, I was skeptical of the plans too, but the forum access is really where the goldmine is.

Hey Deejay how about taking some more pics of that Haas box! Does it include his lens mount/focus, and the LCD, fresnel mounts? For a guy with alot of new parts you sure aren't showing much interest or progress in the project! Maybe I should take some of those parts off your hands?

Deejay have you checked your LCD yet, on the Lumen site under compatible monitors it says: BENQ 557s 15" 400:1 cr 16ms response time xga (note: must be the 557 'S', the 557 isn't usable) Here: http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4I was going to get the CMV CT-520D because the specs look GREAT, but keep reading horror stories about ruining/damaging them while stripping them. So now I'm looking at the BENQ 557s. Which do you have, and are you happy with yours?

I was concerned about this and asked him about it specifically, and he assured me that it would be fine - just mount it on the other side and secure the base to the joists in your ceiling.
I'm currently waiting on a box of my own from Steve, but he's had some set-backs, so I continue to wait...
The only thing you have to worry about is how high from the ceiling it is, because you may get out of your keystoning adjusment window... Some of the guys have had to mount the boxes quite low to get it nice. (Others have tilted the screen with the bottom out, top in to help)

Got a lot more done today. Stripped the lcd monitor, and then tried to get the idea on fitting it into the lcd/lense sled for the case. Haas, who desiged the case, made the lcd slats in the sled to take these thin bits of balsa like wood. Then you epoxy the wood to the outside edge of the lcd. Then slide the wood slats into the grooves on the lense/lcd sled. Well, turns out my lcd is just a bit wider than the space I have to fit it, so I will need to take just abit out of the wood to fit it nice. This will allow me to be able to remove the lcd panel if i ever have to, and I wont have to perm glue the lcd into the case. Nice. Anyways, also got a router today too. Been wanting one for a while, and it will come in handy for this as well. Im going to use it to route out some wood on the back piece for the plugs/switch and fan, as well as making a channel in the side of the case to be able to get wires from front to back withough running them under the lenses... Saw some other guys do this, and it looks great that way. Ok, here again is the link to the pics so far. Click here for pics.

Yup, kinda got that... (I actually read the instructions before using it!)
I have thinned out the wood i needed on the lense sled, and the lcd is now mounted... just getting geared up to mount a fully adjustable setup for the bulb and reflector.
The lumenlab forums and the users there have been a huge help and some of the ideas there have been really great.
I had to move the site where the pics are so you can find the pics by clicking here now. This is the new link for the pics now.

I believe they use a conductive adhesive. If it's the kind of connector I am thinking of, the flat ribbon has exposed copper on the ends (exposed from under a thin laminate over the rest of the copper), and it is "stuck" to the metal connectors underneath with an adhesive or glue that is conductive. You can get conductive glues, tapes, and foils, but I've fixed these kinds of connectors before with tiny bits of match-solder (this solder strips that can be melted by the heat of a match) and an iron. You just have to be very careful if you try this not to short connections (especially because the pads are so close together.
The way I've done it is to use a razor blade to cut the thinnest pieces of match solder I can handle with tweezers and stick them in place at one end with a tiny dab of crazy glue (applied with the tip of a pin) so that they stay put but aren't enveloped by glue. Then, I line up the flat cable that has to go overtop to sandwich the solder stips between itself and the pads, and tape it into place with scotch tape. Then I put a piece of aluminum foil overtop of the cable, and apply a hot iron several times for very short lengths of time. It's tricky, but you can melt the solder without melting the laminate TOO badly. The solder will be a bit fragile, so you have to tape the cable down pretty good so that wiggling it around won't break the connection.
Of course, the conductive glue is much simpler, but it's hard to be accurate.
Hey...if the thing is shot, you might as well try, right?

NEVER!!!!! MU WA HAHAHAHAHAH Hay Deej, Did you get your bad pixel LCD worked out? I'm wondering if you tried the pixel massage method to fix it? If it doesn't fix it maybe it'll cause enough bad pixels they'll RMA it for you. Here is a link to the thread I read: http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1160&st=20And here's a CnP for ya! "The trick is not a trick at all. I call it a risky venture to try and fix a stuck or off pixel. First, if the pixel is completely dead you are unlikely to fix it with this technique, as the transistor is unusable. For pixels with sub pixel problems (mine ended up a sub pixel problem not a complete pixel.) Or, for those with stuck pixels in the red, green, blue, or bright white. Warning! If you try this, it’s at your own risk; this technique has been known to actually cause more dead pixels if forced. The technique is called pixel massage. What you do is find a very soft lens cloth and gently rub around the stuck pixel. In some cases the transistor has a bad connection and you can actually repair or help repair a stuck pixel with this technique. It seems to work best on stuck sub pixels or full on stuck pixels (red, green, blue). Once again, do this at your own risk, if you press very hard you could damage the LCD. If you don’t press hard enough you may have no effect at all. This does not work all the time, but has been known to be successful in bringing a pixel back to life. Cheers, Lee" And if all else fails, sell me your parts! Cheap of course!

Off the shelf 120" projectors are getting cheaper and cheaper every year. I'm just adding to comp's ribbing about taking so long to get done.

Did a lot of tweekin on the projektor last night...
Once you get so close to finishing, its hard to stop! (grin)
Last night, I picked up some dowel from Rona, and got the front frez in...
The sled that came with the box that haas built me had two little divots in about the right place for the frez... I thought that might be why they where there, so i used em.
I got my 3/8ths drill bit out and just made the holes a bit lower so a dowel would fit in there and not get in the way of the lid sliding in the slots.
I cut the dowel i bought so it fit perfectly snug in those notches.
Then i grabbed an idea from another plog at lumenlab. I drilled some tiny holes in the very top edge of the front frez and hung it from the dowel. It swings very nicely, and as you will see, it works great!
(I later cut the excess thread off...)
So then because i had some dark corners i knew i needed to do some tweekin...
I got a 60watt bulb and put it right in front of the box aiming into the box. By doing this, it directed the lightflow back into the box to where the bulb area is.
I then got a piece of paper (in the pic below, there is the sheet metal so i could take the picture and show you the idea.). I moved the paper back and forth to see where the light came to its smallest point. The "sweet spot" was then found!
I moved the bulb right into that spot, and then moved the reflector right up in behind the bulb.
I was lucky actually. I thought the bulb would have been placed back more, but in fact the sweet spot was farther to the front, and in fact the bulb is now right at the front of my adjustable rails. Very lucky. But this also allowed me more room for my wires at the back without worry now of them getting too hot.
See the light spot on the sheet metal below. If you move the metal front to back, you will see the light spot get to its smallest point, and then get bigger. At that smallest point is where i placed the bulb. It also allowed me to know the exact x-y position...
A top-down shot of the whole case with parts installed.
So the wall in my test room is a very light blue color. I have a limited amount of spaces to test it out, so I put a dry erase whiteboard up on the wall too, just to show any difference in colors.
The light is now very even in all the corners and very bright once the bulb gets warmed up...
I am very very stoked about this now. It looks awesome, and now I have to get started building the theater room to use this PJ!!
More screen caps coming! My Fifth Element Dvd was in the truck.. grin
I'm pretty much complete here FINALLY...
Oh ya, I was able to finally get my camera to take decent screen shots too... The picture size in this pic is about 60-70 inches diag... Need a bigger room!

Good advice.... It took me about 9 months to build this thing with kids in the house. Could have done it over a weekend or two without kids around. I would guess it took me about 1000.00 bucks ot build it. Including distroying my first lcd monitor and the first ballast i fired up. Best part is cheap replacement bulbs, 20,000 hour lamp life, and free repairs if it breaks. (Oh ya, and the 9 foot picture now when i watch movies!)

The basic plans are available here free: http://www.lumenlab.com/What you really want to do is spend $20 and join the forums, I'm sure Deejay will agree that is where the real knowledge is!

Hey DeeJay, longtime no see man, glad to see ur still around.
How is the pic quality and brightness compared to a store bought. I have a Panasonic PT900. Just wondering, I like projects like this, may build one for fun.
