Hey Peeps,
Looks like I might be able to get ahold of a Dave HD box cheap (as in free) As a stop gap measure untill the HD/TIVO units get abit less, this is what I'mm contemplating.
The receiver in question is a Toshiba DST3000 Dave HD box. Is it possible to use it as a non-subbed stand alone OTA HD box using the RF ANT connected to a HD roof ant. Or does the card need to be subbed for this Rube Goldberg setup to work. TIA

Not sure. I have heard that the OTA tuners work on Dave boxes that are deactivated. But I can't remember where I read it.

As to the DTIVO, be careful when the price starts dropping. No one can say for sure if they are upgradable to MPEG4. Dave will be switching to that soon. so the price may fall pretty quickly and you will be buying a boat anchor.

Hey A_M or anyone else,

Is this still the case (this MPEG4 question). The price has dropped, $499 at BB. But like A_M said I don't want to get stuck with a huge paper weight.

Not sure on Dave, but Dish announced at CES about their new HD channels and also on Charlie Chat last night.

All new HD channels are going to be MPEG4 only. We will need to updgrade receivers to view them. If you want to upgrade to a regular HD receiver it is going to be $49. If you want to upgrade your HD DVR to the new HD DVR it is going to be $99 ($299 with $200 rebate)

Also the dish will need to be replaced as well. Upgrades offered by DirecTV are suppose to include the dish and installtion in the upgrade pricing.

I hope mine doesn't have to be replaced. They said you would need to upgrade "if necessary". I have the VOOM package and already have a second dish aimed at 61.5 tied in with dish pro plus lnb's. I assume that they are going to run future HD off the 61.5 bird since that is where the VOOM channels are coming from.

Well damn, I completly missed this thread...and it's something im very much interested in.

What im reading here, If I can get my hands on dick or dave box that has OTA abilities, I can hook up that box and still get my OTA for free without having to have to subscribe the card/box?? If this is the case, this is gonna be simple for me. All I gotta do is get a good antenna. I actually come across these types of boxes on a week basis!! More information please!!

Khandurian.....
