Well, I downloaded, installed and ran Avast. It found no viruses, trojans, worms, etc., but that's the only good news. I also have Norton SystemWorks & Ghost installed, which I disabled before installing or running Avast. After I did the Avast sweep, both IE and Opera browsers became barely functional.

Sorry to here that Bagman but I can't figure out why Avast woud of had anything to do with it if it didn't detect anything for you to delete.

It's been about a year and a half since I last formatted and the darn thing has been slowing down quite a bit lately.

You think anything else could of caused it if it was slowing down to begin with?

Yeah, that's always a possibility. I guess it began just after Christmas when I installed a DVD burner and then installed several different burning programs trying to decide which was best for me. I suspect that somewhere in the installing/deleting process that some corruption occurred, and maybe having two AV programs installed at once caused some final corruption. Anyway, I've finally got all my files copied to DVD and will probably start a format tomorrow if MrHappy's suggestion doesn't work. Thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks comp. Avast is nicer than norton and it did speed up boot up and scanning downloaded items from certian free sites. I also like the talking it does but why does it keep saying "go find a sheep"?

while my system has been running as smooth as ever i decided today to run some different scans from different programs just to see what would come up, if anything.

have the macafee suite and it catches things here and there and when i perorm a full scan....all is well.

ran spybot s&d, ad-aware and avast today. about 150 spy/mal wares and 5 worm/trojans found

so i guess the moral of this story today boys and girls is that it couldn't hurt to be paranoid when it seems there is nothing to be paranoid about
