So I've setup a NAS running OpenSuse for a while now. Speeds were solid and better than most other distros to mainly server Windows boxes via Samba. I recently added a second large array to the box and mounted it. At that point things locked up so I shut the system down (via the Shutdown command).

On the next reboot everything freezes and the system refuses to boot so I physically removed the array. Now when linux boots I get dumped to a disk repair prompt and am being told I have a LABEL=NAS2 error as it cannot be found (I named the 2nd array NAS2) No shit, I REMOVED it. But can I bypass this and boot into my OS, nooooooooooo!! The damned array didn't even have data on it but I still can't boot. I have to use partd because it was a 4TB array and no where will it let me remove the damned device much less the label to the now no longer existing array. Anyone know how to get the damned thing booting again long enough to copy the data off the existing array (ext4 file system) then reformat and install Windows Server 08? Linux is a pain in my ass.

Boot disk, fstab manual edit.... ghei. Seriously, it shouldn't be that hard to add a damned array to an OS.

by the way.. no need to add that array to fstab.. you can mount them manually or with a conscript. ..better and safer.

tried ubuntu, speeds across the lan to my win boxes (same hardware) were shit by comparison. Ironically, forced me to try win file server 2008 r2... speeds are fantastic. i certainly need more linux knowledge but it just seems like some stuff is intentionally hard. smile

Happy - sorry to hear your nas was a pain to update.

synapse - I'm the one that referred him to opensuse after ubuntu caused him no end of grief with the video settings.

I still use opensuse on my laptop and am still satisfied with it. Although I did install ubuntu on my wifes laptop,
Sabayon on one of my media centers, loads direct to XBMC.
CentOS with my Asterisk box, which is partially configured due a bad ATA (Linksys WRTP54G - has sever sound issues.) but aleast the extension side works good with the ipods. next step get a new ATA and sign up for a voip service, and drop the Telco.

Not super cheap but 1-Voip has served me VERY well. Call quality is 2nd to none, blacklist and reroute telemarketers, lots of features and excellent customer service. Worth looking into.
