Watch out, Windows! Google is launching an OSThe operating system for Internet-centric computers could start appearing on computers next year
7/8/2009 9:45:00 AM By: Martyn Williams

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) is developing an open-source operating system targeted at Internet-centric computers such as netbooks and will release it later this year, the company said Wednesday.

The OS, which will carry the same "Chrome" name as the company's browser, is expected to begin appearing on netbook computers in the second half of 2010, Google said in a blog post.

It is already talking to "multiple" companies about the project, it added.

The Chrome OS will be available for computers based on the x86 architecture, which is used by Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and the Arm architecture.

Prototypes of Arm-based netbooks began appearing last month at the Computex show in Taiwan and Google's support for the architecture could give it a significant boost. Microsoft's mainstream Windows operating system doesn't run on Arm chips so many manufacturers were talking about using Linux or a version of Google's Android operating system. It's not immediately clear how much the two operating systems share in common code but Google said they are aimed at very different devices.

"Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android," it said. "Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the Web."

While Google is initially looking at the netbook segment of the market it might compete with Microsoft and Apple on larger, Internet-centric machines.

Chrome OS is "being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems," said Google.

The heart of Chrome OS is the Linux kernel. Applications, which can be written in standard Web programming languages, will run inside Google Chrome in a new windowing system. They will additionally run inside the Chrome browser on Windows, Mac or Linux machines, meaning that a single application could run on almost any computer.

Wide support for the platform will be key to getting developers involved and so an important factor in its degree of success. "We have a lot of work to do, and we're definitely going to need a lot of help from the open source community to accomplish this vision," Google said in its blog post.

For end users Google promised a better computing experience on machines with faster access to e-mail, fast boot-up times, access to data from anywhere and the end of problematic hardware configuration, software updates and security issues.

"We are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work," Google said.

Google designing new operating system

Jul 08, 2009 11:34 AM

Chris Sorensen
Business Reporter

Google Inc. is building a computer operating system in a move that could place the search engine giant in direct competition with the industry's other heavyweight, Microsoft Corp.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Google said late Tuesday that it is working on a new open-source operating system that is an extension of its Google Chrome Web browser.

"It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be," Sundar Pichai, Google's vice-president of product management, said in a blog posting.

The Google Chrome OS will be "lightweight" and will be initially targeting netbooks, lower cost laptops that are becoming increasingly popular. The operating system will focus on "speed, simplicity and security" and is expected to be available by the second half of 2010, Google said.

The move could be viewed as an effort to go after the bread and butter of Microsoft's business, which is built around its widely used Windows operating system.

Over the past several years, Google has been attempting to extend its core business beyond search engine technology with offerings that include Gmail and Google Docs, a suite of computer programs that's meant to provide an alternative to Microsoft's word processing, spreadsheet and calendar applications.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has been trying to garner a bigger slice of the search engine market, having recently launched a revamped version of its search technology under the name Bing.

I'm not suprised by it either.. While I'm not a fan of Microsoft, I am also not a fan of Google. and if it comes down to using something as bug-ridden as Vista, Google or Something else (like Linux or Mac).. I think I'll go with Something Else.

Just for kicks I have VMware Fusion on da Mac and got it to run
SCO Xenix 386. Now that is one seriously stable OS. All command
lines, but it is fun to tinker with.

I used to have a Caldera Linux CD around 2000. It ended up in the Trash after SCO pulled this BS. (I'm typing this from a system running openSuSE which is owned by Novell go figure)

 Quote:

On July 29, 2005, Novell filed a countersuit against SCO claiming Slander of Title, Breach of Contract, Failure to Remit Royalties and Failure to Conduct Audit Obligations. Novell sought damages in excess of SCO's net worth, and, as SCO was quickly burning through its assets and cash on hand, Novell asked the court to sequester this money from SCO so that it would not be spent before the resolution of the case. Novell also asked the court to attach SCO's assets pending adjudication of their claims. If Novell wins this motion it would force SCO to file for bankruptcy. They accused SCO of accepting Unix SVR4 licensing money from Microsoft and Sun Microsystems without remitting back to Novell the full 100% of the monies (after which Novell would pay SCO its 5% administration fee). They also mentioned at the beginning of the counterclaim that SCO asked Novell to go in together with them on the Linux IP Infringement Licensing Plan. When Novell refused, SCO asked Novell to turn the copyrights over to SCO, a request Novell also refused.

On January 3, 2006, SCO filed a proposed amended complaint containing the original slander of title claim, as well as several new claims, including unfair competition, copyright infringement and breaching a purported no-compete agreement.

On April 10, 2006, SuSE (part of Novell) filed a Request for Arbitration with the Secretariat of the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris, France. Years earlier SCO (then named Caldera) had signed contracts with SuSE (now owned by Novell) involving UnitedLinux. In this contract the UnitedLinux members agreed that each member would have broad licenses to exploit and distribute Linux products that include UnitedLinux technology, and they agreed to arbitration of disagreements. This request by SuSE was in response to SCO's amended complaint against Novell alleging copyright infringement. The arbitration process has relatively strict timelines, unlike the U.S. courts' procedures. Novell filed a "Motion to Stay Claims Raising Issues Subject to Arbitration" in the U.S. courts, saying that four of five SCO claims (including copyright infringement) have been brought to arbitration, and thus can be stayed in the U.S. court until the Arbitration Tribunal renders its decision. Novell also filed an "Answer to SCO's 2d Amended Complaint and Counterclaims", claiming a large number of affirmative defenses, one of which accuses SCO of conducting fraud on the U.S. copyright office.

The crazy chit about that suit was that SCO paid Bell Labs for the
rights to the Unix source to create Xenix. Bell Labs never squeaked.
