Now that DirecTV and Tivo have officially kissed and made up, do any of you guys that switched to the Dave DVR have the urge to switch back when the new HD Tivo unit comes out this year?

I'll be going to a HD DVR unit sometime this year and I haven't decided if I should wait for the Tivo unit or not.

What's your opinion now that you've used the Dave unit for a while now?

The DTV units have improved. They are up to the HR23 model.
When you call in for an upgrade you do not get to choose
what model you get. They also have you agree to a lease
and another 2 year agreement. It is not your DVR it is theirs.
You can request to buy it and they will let you own it. The price
goes to $499. I do own my HR21.That way I can crack it open
Even if you buy one from BB or Solid Signal you are leasing
it unless you pony up the money to own it.

I am going to see how the new D-TIVOs are. I will probably get one
and end up owning it so that I can mod its recording capacity which
is 100% legal.

Well, I don't like the idea of leasing one...but I'm not sure I wanna pay to own for that much. I wonder if I can use an older model?

The rep I just talked to about the unit I own told me that if I
can get a working unit on eBay they will send me a card for $20
and activate the receiver. Of course the monthly HD and DVR fees apply.
I just checked craigslist and found a couple there also.

Then you own that unit. you can make piñata out of it if you want to.

Sounds like a great plan.

I just ordered a Philips HDR Series 120GB CES11962 from surplus computers for $49. They're out. It's a first gen that can be used without subbing ( no tivo menu. VCR-like setup).

It has to dial in one time to get off of guided setup or it can't be used.

Are you using a 4 wire phone cord or a 2 wire. The first gen units
were flaky as Ross the Intern.
